Have you ever wanted to build your own Star Wars Droid? At Disney’s Hollywood Studio at Walt Disney World you can. In this post I share what you need to know to build a Droid at Disney World, including cost, tips, and is it worth it.

The droid-building experience at Disney World is a fun experience for Star Wars fans visiting the Disney theme park. Even if you are not a Star Wars fan, it is still really fun!

The Droid Depot is located at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It is an add-on experience, guests need a theme park ticket to enter the park and a reservation for the experience.

Today I want to bring you along from start to finish of how to experience building a Droid at Disney World.

Build a Droid at Disney World

This is a quick overview of what to expect when you build a Droid at Hollywood Studios.

  • Check-in to the Droid Depot
  • Decide on Which Droid You Will Make: R-Series or BB-Series
  • Start at the conveyer belt (parts station) where you will pick out the different parts you need for your Droid. There are all different color pieces to customize your droid anyway you would like. You are given a basket to collect your items that will show you what you need to collect.
  • Next go over to the building station (assembly station) where a cast member will assist you on how to put your Droid together.
  • Finally you and the cast member will activate your Droid. The activation process is really cute and it is fun to see your new droid come to life!

Types of Astromech Droid Units to Build at Disney World

R-Series Unit:

  • Dome
  • Body
  • Center Leg
  • Set of Side-Legs

BB-Series Unit:

  • Dome
  • Dome Connection Plate
  • Body Sphere
  • Motivator

Droid Depot Backpack:

The Droid Depot Backpack is an add on that guests can purchase to carry their Droid around the parks. Within Galaxy’s Edge the Droid will interact with different features.

If you would like to include the backpack you can upgrade your purchase for $49.99-$59.99. If you are planning on spending the day at the park it may be useful to have the backpack to carry your Droid.

We did our experience later in the day and carrying it in the box wasn’t an issue for us.

Droid Depot Cost

A droid cost $129.99 plus tax. A carrying box, remote control, and instructions are included. Additional accessories like the droid backpack and personality chips may be added at additional cost.

Hollywood Studios Build a Droid Disney World Experience

Building a Droid was one of the coolest experiences we have done at Disney World. You can customize your Droid to make sounds, move around, and even interact with certain elements in the land.

There is a remote control and personality chips to create a unique experience at the theme parks. We arrived about 15 minutes before our reservation time and checked-in.

From there we were given a basket to start collecting parts along the conveyer belt. Once the pieces are collected we were assigned a building port where a cast member helps assemble the Droid.

After it is put together the Droid is brought to life! My kids loved this and we had so much fun with the experience.

Tips

  • Expect the build a Droid experience to take between 30-60 minutes from start to finish. We completed it in 30 minutes from check-in to finish. This can vary depending on the day.
  • I strongly suggest you make reservations for your Droid experience. This will save you time and allow you to plan your day accordingly. Reservations can be made here.
  • They do leave reservations open for walk-ins. Check in at the Droid Depot desk to see if there is availability. If you do not have reservations expect to wait in a long line.
  • Disney recommends the Droid building for ages 3+. One person in the party must be older than 14.
  • 2 guests are allowed at a Droid station and only 1 person can make the droid. If you are looking to share one droid for the family this may be an issue.
  • There is a small section in Galaxy’s Edge that you can try out your Droid, but you can’t drive it around the park on the ground during your visit.

Is Building a Droid at Disney World Worth It

Short answer: Yes. It is super fun and a really cool souvenir.

But, deciding if it is worth it is very personal. What is great for some may not be great for others. These are the things to consider:

  • Cost of building a Droid at Disney World is currently $129.99 +tax. (as of 1/2026) You need to decided if this cost is worth it for your Disney budget.
  • Time. It takes about 1-1.5 hours to experience this. You will lose time at the parks. This may be fine with you but it is something to consider.
  • Are you a Star Wars Fan? If you are a die hard Star Wars fan you are going to enjoy this, even if you are not, most kids really like building their own robot. But you have to consider if it is even something your family will enjoy.

You do end up with a really unique and one of a kind souvenir. Our droid is purple, blue, and red which may not make sense at all but it is a bit of all of us and brings back fun memories of our visit.

Truthfully, I can’t tell you if spending an extra $130.00 on a souvenir is worth it, because it is a personal decision. If you enjoy Star Wars even the slightest you will probably enjoy this add on experience.

Final Thoughts

Building a Droid is a unique experience to add on to your day at the park. Remember to purchase Disney park tickets before you arrive, the Droid experience is a separate purchase, and enjoy being immersed into the Star Wars world.

My kids were at the perfect age to experience it (7, 9, and 11) and they ended up playing with it at home too. The most challenging part was deciding who was going to build the Droid and who is going to sit out.

As per Disney, 2 people can be at a Droid station. One person is the builder and one can watch. The experience is not really made for a group or families. You can see your builder but if you have multiple kids that want to experience it, the experience can become pricey.

We only built one and had to explain that to the kids. It may be easier for your family to skip the experience if it will cause more issues than not.

We enjoyed it and I would include it in your trip to Disney World if you love Star Wars.
